Aligning your priorities to your values

Hey Reader,

I hope you had a great weekend and are ready to reflect and wrap up January. Yes, that’s right, the first month of 2024 comes to an end this week. January for me was a time and period of observation. 2023 was another year of transition and my main prayer was to focus on stability moving into 2024. So during this month, I observed my commitments, my energy, my time for myself, my time for my family and friends, my time for my business, and my time within my career. I was forced to look at how I spent my time and if it aligned to the goals I had for myself.

If you have been a long time reader of our weekly newsletter the end of the month is the time for reflection. So review your goals and reflect on your month:

Part I

  1. What are your glows or what went well this month?
  2. What are your grows or what could be improved?

Part II

Look at your calendar to see how you spent your time. When you review how you spent your time you will see the things that you value.

  1. How did you spend your time this month?
  2. What does your calendar say about your values in your school?

Part III

  1. What are your goals and priorities for the upcoming month?
  2. What are two action steps to ensuring you meet these goals?

Reader, this is really a game changing in how you organize your time as school leaders. If you value celebration, does your calendar reflect that?

If you value growth and development, does your calendar reflect that?

If you value community, does your calendar reflect that?

So, what does a calendar look like of a leader that values celebration, growth and development, and community?

  1. Classroom walkthroughs and coaching meetings
  2. Moments of celebration on social media, shout outs, announcements, newsletters and other places for public recognition
  3. Participation in PLCs, visiting the lunchroom, connecting with parents during drop-off or pick up

If you are ready to have an action plan that aligns your values and goes to your action, I’d love to support you during my Leadership Roadmap Strategy Session.

During a strategy session we:

  1. Identify key leadership competencies you want to grow in as a leader
  2. Unpack a current leadership dilemma
  3. Engage in data driven goal setting and action planning related to dilemma

You’ll leave the session with clarity and actionable next steps to implement immediately for the 2nd half of the school year.

This year we are transforming as leaders and conquering the chaos with clarity and a strategy and I want to help you on this journey.

Reader, here’s to an amazing week of clarity and productivity!

Hey Reader, I hope your spring is going well — I know this time of year can feel like a sprint and a marathon at the same time. Whether you're closing out this school year or already planning for the next (especially if you're in New York preparing for the upcoming class size reductions in 2025-26 school year), there's a lot on your plate. One thing I’ve been stressing with leaders lately: no matter how much is happening, alignment to your instructional vision is everything. Over the past few...

Hey Reader, I'm popping into your inbox to check in—January is quickly coming to an end, but there’s still plenty of time to reflect, readjust, and reset. Today is a day of remembrance as we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., it’s a moment to reflect on his dream of equity and progress. This is also an opportunity to align our efforts with the shared goal of ensuring success and opportunity for every student. Since we’re approaching the midpoint of the school year, it’s the...

Hey Reader, Happy Monday and Happy Labor Day! I hope today you are all resting, especially if you are a principal in New York because students and staff return this week for the SY24-25 school year! Back in August I shared what school leaders need in order to have a strong start to the school year. Remember, to have a strong start you need to be proactive - the fires will come, you don’t have to wait and be reactive. Set up as many systems and structures needed to implement your instructional...
