Are you leading a vision-driven school?

Hey Reader,

I hope your spring is going well — I know this time of year can feel like a sprint and a marathon at the same time. Whether you're closing out this school year or already planning for the next (especially if you're in New York preparing for the upcoming class size reductions in 2025-26 school year), there's a lot on your plate.

One thing I’ve been stressing with leaders lately: no matter how much is happening, alignment to your instructional vision is everything.

Over the past few months, I’ve worked with over 15 school leaders and 60+ educators across 14 schools, and the biggest gap I’m seeing is a consistent one: lack of alignment.

Let’s clear up some misconceptions:

❌ Alignment is not perfection.
❌ Alignment is not robotic or rigid.
❌ Alignment is not about compliance or one-time communication.
❌ Alignment is not assuming everyone understands the vision automatically.
❌ Alignment is not uniformity without honoring different styles, contexts, and needs.

When you are out of alignment, you lose sight of your why.
You question your purpose.
You experience burnout and a lack of joy.

So, what is alignment?

Shared clarity around the vision.
Consistency in actions and practices.
Collaboration and ownership from all stakeholders.
Coherence across systems and structures.
Dynamic feedback and ongoing adjustment to stay focused.

Alignment is not about everyone doing the same thing — it's about everyone moving in the same direction with clarity, consistency, and commitment.

I know the landscape has shifted:

  • New mandates
  • Increased compliance pressures
  • Parent complaints
  • Teacher and student challenges
  • Staffing shortages
  • Enrollment challenges

These are real issues. They drain your time, your energy, and your capacity.

I’ve been where you are. I know the weight you carry.

You might be thinking:

"How can I focus on anything but the fires?"

Pause and ask yourself:

  • Am I clear on the vision?
  • Am I consistent with the practices toward the vision?
  • Am I committed to the vision?
  • Am I modeling clarity, consistency, and commitment for my staff?

As you reflect, keep this definition in mind:

"Alignment occurs when there is shared clarity, commitment, and consistency across people, practices, and systems, all working together toward a common instructional vision. It ensures that every decision, action, and initiative reinforces the goals for student success, teacher effectiveness, and organizational excellence."

Remember: Alignment isn’t a destination — it’s an ongoing journey of learning, reflection, and recalibration.

Leadership Reflection

Before you move on or move out, check your anchor and your light.

Leadership isn't just about steering through storms — it’s about staying grounded in your vision and guided by your purpose.

If you feel adrift, pause.

Re-anchor your vision. Rekindle your light. Then lead forward.

Hey Reader, I hope you are having a great week. If you are in the North East, I hope you have weathered the storm and are bracing yourself for more snow this weekend. Just last week I was in 75-80 degree weather in Savannah, Georgia, enjoying time with family - and praying our Sunday flight home wouldn’t get cancelled. Thankfully, we made it back before all of the cancellations and have been enjoying our snow days. It had me reflecting. Almost six years ago, my daughter was a newborn as we...

Hey Reader, I hope you are rested and well. February is an interesting month. We’ve gotten past the newness of January and reality is starting to settle in. Although this is technically Q1 for many, most of the leaders I work with in schools and nonprofits we are in Q3. The end of the year is quickly approaching. As a leader, you are probably spending a lot of time talking about the work - the meetings, the emails, the plans, the updates. In my role as Chief of Staff I’m preparing strategic...

Hey Reader, I hope you are doing well and staying warm. It seems like most of the country is experiencing record breaking levels of snow and frigid temperatures. I hope you and your community are managing and continuing to make progress and gains, while holding space to pause considering everything that’s happening in the world. Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about the nuance of holding space, beyond simply acknowledging current events, but truly sitting with the tension they bring. Many...
