Hey Reader, I hope your spring is going well — I know this time of year can feel like a sprint and a marathon at the same time. Whether you're closing out this school year or already planning for the next (especially if you're in New York preparing for the upcoming class size reductions in 2025-26 school year), there's a lot on your plate. One thing I’ve been stressing with leaders lately: no matter how much is happening, alignment to your instructional vision is everything. Over the past few months, I’ve worked with over 15 school leaders and 60+ educators across 14 schools, and the biggest gap I’m seeing is a consistent one: lack of alignment. Let’s clear up some misconceptions: ❌ Alignment is not perfection. When you are out of alignment, you lose sight of your why. So, what is alignment? ✅ Shared clarity around the vision. Alignment is not about everyone doing the same thing — it's about everyone moving in the same direction with clarity, consistency, and commitment. I know the landscape has shifted:
These are real issues. They drain your time, your energy, and your capacity. I’ve been where you are. I know the weight you carry. You might be thinking: "How can I focus on anything but the fires?" Pause and ask yourself:
As you reflect, keep this definition in mind: "Alignment occurs when there is shared clarity, commitment, and consistency across people, practices, and systems, all working together toward a common instructional vision. It ensures that every decision, action, and initiative reinforces the goals for student success, teacher effectiveness, and organizational excellence." Remember: Alignment isn’t a destination — it’s an ongoing journey of learning, reflection, and recalibration. Leadership ReflectionBefore you move on or move out, check your anchor and your light. Leadership isn't just about steering through storms — it’s about staying grounded in your vision and guided by your purpose. If you feel adrift, pause. Re-anchor your vision. Rekindle your light. Then lead forward. Hey Reader, I'm popping into your inbox to check in—January is quickly coming to an end, but there’s still plenty of time to reflect, readjust, and reset. Today is a day of remembrance as we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., it’s a moment to reflect on his dream of equity and progress. This is also an opportunity to align our efforts with the shared goal of ensuring success and opportunity for every student. Since we’re approaching the midpoint of the school year, it’s the...
Hey Reader, Happy Monday and Happy Labor Day! I hope today you are all resting, especially if you are a principal in New York because students and staff return this week for the SY24-25 school year! Back in August I shared what school leaders need in order to have a strong start to the school year. Remember, to have a strong start you need to be proactive - the fires will come, you don’t have to wait and be reactive. Set up as many systems and structures needed to implement your instructional...
Hey Reader Happy May! I hope you had a restful weekend, because this month it’s time to bloom. I can’t wait for the May flowers. With the year coming to an end as you prep for step up ceremonies, graduations, and other end of year celebrations, don’t forget to take a moment individually and with your team to reflect on the school year. In April, our affirmation was: “I am preparing with purpose and setting clear intentions, guiding my school towards a successful end to the school year.” What...
